Hello beauty lovers!
After taking a sabbatical from the blog, I’m happy to say I am back and feeling much better. For those of you who don’t know, I’m pregnant! And let me just say that I would never wish the first trimester on anyone. It’s brutal, but obviously worth it 🙂 If you’d like to check in on me and baby, check us out on my pregnancy blog HERE.
Now on to more pressing beauty news. Lips are a huge trend that aren’t going away anytime soon. What’s great about wearing a bold or bright lip is that it allows you to be somewhat “lazy” with the rest of your makeup: just throw on some winged liner and mascara and you’re done, right?!
In honor of the lip trend, I wanted to share some of my favorite lip must-haves from MAC Cosmetics. I have been on/off with this amazing brand for the last 11 years so not only do I know the product like the back of my hand, but I obviously love and recommend it too. Before we begin I do want to tell you guys that lipstick is THE hardest thing to purchase at a makeup store. You absolutely must try it on before you purchase to see how the color will pay off on your lips. Swatching it on your hand does not help, because most people have a different skin tone in their lips than their hand. Here we go…
UP THE AMP LIPSTICK & FASHION BOOST LINER
Up the Amp is a creamy red-violet lipstick that looks good on most golden/olive skin tones. The beauty of Up the Amp is that it looks different on everyone! I have loved this color for about 9 years, and I finally found its perfect pair in Fashion Boost liner, which is a magenta-toned purple color. The liner is a long-wearing formula so it helps Up The Amp stay on for up to 6 hours. IF you have darker skin and don’t fall in love with Up the Amp, try it’s deeper, frostier sister in Violetta (MAC store-only).
SIN LIPSTICK & CYBER WORLD LINER
I just recently began my relationship with Sin lipstick. Long-loved by celebrities like Rihanna, Sin is a deliciously deep dark matte burgundy red. So rich! I like pairing it with Cyber World liner to pull out the blackish-purple undertones in the lipstick. Ugh, this combination is gorgeous on everyone, from fair all the way to deep dark.
REBEL LIPSTICK & NIGHTINGALE LINER
Rebel is a mid-tonal cream plum with a berry undertone. There are two things I love about this lipstick other than the amazing color: it’s a Satin finish, meaning it’s a semi-matte that gives you all the benefits of a long-wearing matte without the dry feeling. The second is the fact that there is something about this color that actually stains the lips, thus making it last longer and leaving a nice stain behind. Nightingale lip liner is a brand new lip liner, and the ONLY one in the MAC lineup that matches Rebel perfectly. Love this combo on everyone!
VICTORIANA LIPSTICK & CHERRY LINER
Victoriana is a limited edition, matte red lipstick from the MAC Toledo collection. It makes me sad that this is a limited item because it is the BEST red lipstick I have every seen from MAC. The most popular red, Ruby Woo, actually looks pink compared the to the true, vibrant, matte red that is Victoriana. I can’t get enough of the beautiful depth and color of this lipstick. And pairing it with Cherry liner just makes it disrespectfully perfect.
Hi Beauty Babes,
On a recent trip home to Las Vegas, I noticed a new store in my favorite shopping center (Boca Park.) My sister and I are huge Lush fanatics so naturally we ran over and clamored each other trying to get in the door of this place.
Sweet Bubble Bath Confections is a European-themed bakery of soap confections started by sisters Susan, Debbie and Mary. Their shop features brightly decorated cupcakes, sprinkled doughnuts, yummy looking cakes, pies, tarts and cookies. In addition to the whimsical collection of “fresh-baked” goodies is a collection of Slushes (scrubs), Soap Slices and Frostings (heavy lotion,) which in my opinion are the best part of their product line.
Here are my goodies: a handmade bar of soap in Jasmine Blush ($9.50) and Body Slush in Bergamot ($22)
The Soap Slice is made of olive and coconut oils and smells divine. It’s a rather large piece of soap: 1 1/2 inches thick and about four inches tall. It lathers nicely and leaves your skin smelling lightly of the scent of your choice. I like that it’s not over-powering and leaves your skin squeaky-clean. I love the Jasmine Blush, but I’m already planning on getting the Ocean Pearl scent next!
The Body Slush in a sugar and shea butter mixture that you apply while in the shower. The formula is addicting: I use it almost every time I shower! It sloughs off dead skin cells, revealing brighter and smoother skin. Once you rinse off the sugar, it leaves behind the silky, lotion-y feeling of the shea butter. Towel-dry and get dressed because you don’t even need to apply lotion afterwards. I chose the Bergamot scent: It smells super clean and invigorating with a small hint of floral. Ahhhh I love this stuff!
If you don’t live in Vegas, don’t fret: you can order online at http://www.sweetbubblesoap.com/Free shipping for orders over $100
Hello my makeup-loving dolls,
Eye shadow palettes are literally coming out of every brand’s ears at the moment. There are a plethora to choose from, and it can be confusing. I’m here to break it down for you.
As a makeup artist, I’m always keeping my eye out for good eyeshadow palettes for my kit. What I’m not looking for? Palettes that are filled with shimmer on top of frost, on top of sparkly shimmer eye shadows. Unfortunately, most of the eye palettes out now are just that. Women buy them, try to do a smoky eye with them, then don’t understand why all the colors have muddled together and smeared. It’s not because you don’t know how to put them on, it’s because they are ALL shimmer shadows, and blending them together is a recipe for disaster.
I’ll be going over my top picks for eyeshadow palettes that contain all or mostly matte shadows. Matte eyeshadows are gorgeous. They pay off well and don’t smear the way shimmery shadows do. They also wear longer.
Here we go:
This palette comes with 7 matte shadows and 7 shimmers and includes a double ended high quality brush. It’s a great starter kit for anyone new to the eyeshadow game, and it’s also fantastic for the makeup artist who is just tired of dragging 27 palettes around. It’s got all your neutral and dark basics in two different textures for mixing and matching. Plus, if you buy this at Sephora this cute kit comes with a deluxe sample size of Smashbox’s mascara.
I actually just went ahead and purchased this one. It’s SO pretty! It comes in a small case that is easy to travel with or stash in your purse for those of you who get ready on the go. And how thoughtful was it of them to make the lighter “base” shadows bigger than the darker colors (since those are the first ones to go)? This palette has got something that will compliment any eye color. For Green or Hazel, use the pink, purple and grey. For Blue, use the cream and two browns. For Brown, use all of them (ha ha, we are lucky girls!) I can’t wait to leave all 18 of my eyeshadow palettes at home the next time I do a wedding. I’m bringing this and my Naked Basics, which you will see next.
This compact is the smallest of the bunch but packs a big, matte punch. I personally use this palette daily. The color payoff is impressive and the these smooth shades go with just about everything. You can go from a neutral eye to a smoky one with these six colors. The only shimmer is the first one, Venus, which is beautiful in the corners of the eye or on the brow bone.
These 10 wearable matte shades can be worn wet or dry. What’s more, it comes with an eight-page look book and a handy dandy black eyeliner pencil. This is a great option for those of you who have basic mattes, and want some more fun colors to add to your collection. I’m really digging the orange on the bottom left!
Hello Summer Sunshines!
Today I’m bringing you six all-new products that I’m super stoked about using this summer. Thanks to my recent birthday, I had a plethora of Sephora gift cards to splurge on and here’s what I got, and give the Lady C seal of approval on:
Bite’s lip mask caught my eye because it was made to apply before drying, matte lipsticks to shield your pucker from flaking. Matte lipsticks are all the rage and have proved they are here to stay, so you might as well pick up one of these to prep your lips before application. If there’s one thing I hate more than Birkenstocks, it’s the feeling of dry, cracked lips. A small amount soaks right in without budging or ruining the look of matte lipstick, a generous amount gives you a beautiful shine and feels divine. I’ve been using it at night prior to bed as a healing treatment, then applying before any lipstick in the morning. Have I mentioned the yummy factor? The all-natural formula is made with agave, vanilla and more antioxidants than a glass of wine. Even hubby steals it once in a while. Don’t tell him I told you.
This is the type of product that needs to be demonstrated to show its full potential, which is exactly the reason I ended up buying it. Michele from Boscia (pronounced Bosh-ah, for those of us who have been calling it Boss-kee-ah) peaked my interest by luring me in to try the sponge in action on my hand. I walked over to the bowl of warm water where this little black sponge was floating, and she rubbed the little guy all over the back of my hand for about 5 seconds. I kid you not, five seconds later the back of my right hand was significantly brighter and more glow-ey than my left and felt as smooth as those Tiger’s Eye rocks I used to collect as a kid.
This pore-perfecting pillow-soft Konjac Cleansing Sponge is infused with Bamboo Charcoal for clean, smooth skin. Use it with face wash to rub all traces of non-waterproof makeup off and brighten and tone skin on your under-eye area, face and neck. The black sponge is for oilier skin and there is a white option for dryer, more sensitive skins.
I. Am. Obsessed. I use it every night in the shower with my new face wash to remove my makeup and clear up my skin. It’s soft, luxurious, and a whole new way to enjoy the tedious task of cleaning your face. My pores are cleaner and the occasional pimple is now less prevalent. Out of all the new things I’m showing you today, I feel like this is the one you absolutely MUST get.
Because it is made of organic material, you should replace the sponge every 2-3 months.
BOSCIA TSUBAKI CLEANSING OIL-GEL: $28
Cleansing oils are the newest trend in skincare, but it’s not for everyone. If you want to dip your toe into the world of cleansing oils without risking a breakout, Boscia’s Tsubaki Cleansing Oil-Gel is a great place to start. The slippery gel texture feels like a face wash, but has minimal suds and all the effects of a cleansing oil without the greasy mess.
It’s a lightweight botanical blend of tsubaki oil (camellia oil), wakame (Japanese sea kelp), and rice bran oil that hydrates, smooths, and protects for the appearance of firm, youthful skin while also removing the daily dirt.
It smells like a Japanese garden! It’s on the pricier side, but it does go a long way. I use one pump on my Konjac sponge and it does the job.
This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill dry shampoo. It also volumizes your hair and extends your style. My hair has been living in various fishtail and french braids this spring and nothing keeps it more together than this stuff. I sprinkle a little in my hands, rub them together and smooth over my strands before securing into a “messy” braid. I also use it to fix my stubborn, growing-out side bangs. It’s fantastic! Works well for all lengths of hair.
This is Benefit’s answer to BB cream, and what made me want to try it is that it goes from liquid to powder, which my oily skin desperately needs. I love BB creams in the colder months, but I find them to be too greasy in the summer season. The Big Easy has a medium coverage, which is fantastic for every day use, with a high dose of SPF 35 to protect your skin from aging. The foundation self-adjusts to your exact shade to even out skin tone and conceal imperfections! I wear the Medium shade and most days, I don’t even use a powder to set it.
Based on the name, this mascara had some big shoes to fill. Better than sex? While I beg to differ, I will say that I do love this mascara. Those of you who read my blog on the regular know I was a huge fan of Revlon’s Grow-Luscious line of mascaras. Sadly, I stopped purchasing after I discovered that Revlon is not cruelty-free. In my hunt for cruelty-free, I came across Too Faced’s line of peeper-inhancers and found this gem. It is an intensely black, volumizing mascara with an hourglass-shaped brush that separates, coats, and curls each lash to voluptuous perfection. My lashes look like they are flying off the shelves when I wear this. Go out and get yours! It’s worth the $23.
I finally jumped on the Birchbox bandwagon!
I tried to avoid Birchbox. It just annoyed me that everyone and their mom’s makeup artist had a subscription and wouldn’t stop raving about it. Then, buckling under peer pressure, I signed up twice for the waiting list, then let it expire when my turn was up. I even tried other beauty subscription-monthly bags, and I just wasn’t satisfied. The quality of the products was drugstore sale-rack at best, and I ended up giving anything that was worthwhile away because as a makeup artist, I already own everything and had no business having a beauty-box subscription.
So curiosity got the best of me and I finally caved. My January Birchbox came in the mail and by the time the weekend was over I had already tried everything and made them all a part of my everyday routine.
I must say I am very impressed with the product selection.
Every kit comes with two pieces: a polish for a solid foundation and a pot that houses a textured topper. Accent options include Nail Sequin, for the ultimate disco-ball mani; Nail Glitter, to create serious sparkle; Nail Caviar, for a rich encrusted look; and Nail Velvet, which leaves a luxe matte finish. This is an affordable option for those of you who want to experiment with the nail art trend without committing to a ton of products.
Made using all-natural ingredients, including mica and zinc oxide, these shadows are rich in pigment for vivid colors that promise to stay on all day.
Fekkai’s encapsulated shine-release complex delivers softening olive oil into each strand throughout the day. I apply a quarter-sized amount to the ends of my clean, damp hair and blow dry for a soft-to-the-touch look.
True to its name, this hand cream is made 100% with all natural moisturizers like avocado oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, while vitamins and antioxidants help fend off damage from free radicals. It smells heavenly. Great for right before bed!
Ahmad’s teas come in a variety of mouthwatering flavors, all perfectly blended with high-grade ingredients. I’ve never met a tea I didn’t like, so no complaints here.
A new year means it’s January- just a week after you got a ton of gift cards to your favorite beauty destinations for the holidays. Don’t worry, I already did the research for you and rounded up a bunch of items that you should try next. Ladies–whip out your Christmas gift cards because it’s about to go down:
This silky smooth powder has a micro fine finish and comes with a moon-shaped brush for easy application on not only your cheekbones, but your shoulders, collarbone, and other high points of your body. This shade looks beautiful on every skin tone and is a fantastic addition to anything you may already have from Urban Decay’s coveted Naked line.
Lorac Pro Set: $42
Oh how I love a good eyeshadow palette! What makes this one stand out from all the other palettes available is that there are eight matte shadows, and eight shimmer shadows, giving you endless combinations. If you’re an avid reader, you are familiar with me whining about the lack of matte eyeshadows in the world’s palettes, so the fact that this has eight is a Christmas miracle. It’s so beautiful! Created by makeup artist Carol Shaw, this is a great palette for beginners too.
Rumor has it my mom-in-law and sister-in-law fought over who got to get this for me for Christmas this year. I shrieked in delight when I opened this last week. Nail art beads in…ROSE GOLD?! Ever since my husband proposed to me with a rose gold ring, I’ve been obsessed with collecting everything rose gold.
The trick to making the beads stay on is dousing every centimeter of your nail in top coat after applying them. I have no idea why the instructions in the box tell you to avoid applying anything on top, because if you don’t, the beads will fall off faster than Miley Cyrus’s bra in her next Instagram post.
This paraben-free peel off mask is A) fun to look at and B) actually lifts dead skin cells and unblocks your pores with its mineral-rich formula. I’ve been dying to smear my face is this volcanic, lava-like glue since it came out and I’m happy to say it was worth the wait. If this mask seems a little expensive to you, try the travel-size version, available in the waiting line at your nearest Sephora. By the way, does anyone else get in and out of line because you get sidetracked looking at all the tiny goodies on the way to pay for your own stuff? I lose my place in line at least three times at each visit.
I’ve been a huge fan of these babies for a while now. Handmade with all-natural ingredients, the Ripe Shop’s lip balms are ridiculously cheap and heavenly on your soup coolers. I’m drooling just looking at these flavors. I gifted these to my coworkers, in case you thought I was a hoarder.
Which one of these fabulous goodies do you think you will try?
Hi Beauty Babes! With fall fast approaching (even though it feels like Death Valley in most of Southern California right now) I wanted to share with you some of the newest products hitting the shelves. These are all definitely on my “Must-Buy” list! Makeup…it’s a never-ending addiction of love.
Dior is adding this divine makeup setting spray to its Airflash foundation line. Micronized powder particles provide a soft veil of sheer coverage, while the Matt’Smart Complex™ smooths and perfects skin, eliminating shine. This product is perfect for the girl who suffers from oily skin, or the chick who wants to go dancing all night smudge-free.
Touted as the “healthy new alternative to gel manicures,” Deborah Lippman’s Gel Lab contains a base coat and a top coat that gives any ol’ polish gel-like shine and wearability, without the harsh chemicals and annoying removal process of gel manis. I know gel manicures are all the rage, but I for one have sensitive skin around my cuticles and the removal process was killing me. The best part? The Gel Lab is formaldehyde-free and NOT tested on animals.
Cover FX is known for their skin-friendly full-coverage makeup, and they now carry a CC cream that is (gasp!) VEGAN! The paraben-free formula color corrects and evens skin complexion while delivering anti-aging benefits with powerful Vitamin C. If you’re not sure what CC creams are, click HERE for my previous post for fun facts.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw this stunner. As you well know from my Youtube videos, I am simply obsessed with Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Eden (the matte one). This brand new Anti Aging Primer delivers the same, crease-free vibrant color wear as Eden, but ALSO contains high-tech ingredients that help to improve the signs of aging over time. Dermaxyl® helps smooth the appearance of wrinkles; Kalpariane® plumps, firms, and hydrates skin as it improves suppleness and elasticity; and optical blurring pigments create a subtle, soft-focus effect that instantly wakes up tired eyes and minimizes the appearance of redness, crepiness, and other imperfections.
If you are starting from scratch or looking for all new makeup for your bathroom drawer, Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Modern Matte collection is the one for you. This set contains their brand new Better Than Sex mascara, whose hourglass shaped brush helps pump up your lashes, their 8-hour wear Perfect Eyes eyeliner in black, Shadow Insurance eyeshadow primer, NINE matte eyeshadows (everyone knows I can’t stand shimmer), and a three-piece cruelty-free brush set. All for $65!
Hourglass is quickly becoming one of my favorite makeup lines, especially for mature skin. These creamy, full coverage, satin-y lip crayons comes in 6 nude shades to fit every skin tone. Sexy!
Let me know if you try any of these new Fall goodies!
