Drug Store Cosmetics Review – WITH VIDEO

IMG_4397

Hello beauty lovers, and welcome to a new week! March is here; the weather is warm and my backyard is once again a brothel for the neighborhood birds.

It’s been a while since I’ve made a haul/review video so I thought I’d share some of my latest drug store beauty finds with you.

Now this isn’t just your average “here’s what I love” video. I also included the stuff I wasn’t impressed with. Click below to see what I would truly buy again and what was a total disappointment.

QUICK RECAP

Bio Oil – Love it, great for stretch marks, scars and even dry skin and eczema! If you are pregnant, I recommend dousing your belly and thighs every night in the oil before you sleep, even before you start to show. Coat the area and rub it in with your hands. This will help prevent stretch marks as your belly grows into the second and third trimesters.

Maybelline Baby Lips– Not impressed. A cheap thrill that smells artificial and does nothing to hydrate your lips. Let’s not even bring up the hideous frosty finish.

NYX The Curve – Decent liquid eye liner for the price and great applicator for beginners!

Kiss Nail Dress – These are fragile and won’t last through a shower. I only recommend these for a night out.

Loreal True Match Concealer Stick – Don’t love the formula for concealing, but it’s fantastic for contour and highighting! Buy shades lighter and darker than you and draw them right on. Blend in with your fingers or a sponge and you are set.

Milani Liquid Eye Pencil – Amazing long wearing eye liner, especially for the low price point! Great for the eyelid or the waterline. The brown is my fave.

Revlon Grow Luscious – Obsessed. I buy this mascara over and over again. It feels velvety-soft on the lashes and helps them grow at the same time. I love the big bushy brush on this!

Loreal Color Riche Nail Lingerie – Clear nail tape with delicate gold and silver embellishments, these are beautiful over solid nail polish colors! Don’t apply them the way it says on the box because it will cause fraying. I recommend placing them one at a time on your nails then warming them up with a blow dryer. Smooth down the warmed edges with a nail file for smooth edges.

Have you tried any of these products? What do you love/hate about them?

Drugstore Makeup For Brides

Hello pretty ladies!

This past weekend I hosted a booth for the first time at the ever-upscale I Do! Bridal Event given by Fancy That Events at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, Calif. It was such a cool experience! With my trusty PR guru and dear friend Jennifer Castaneda by my side, we met bubbly glowing brides and their friends and family members.

Being a recent bride myself, I was “tricked” many times by booth giveaways that were actually ploys. I’d get phone calls saying that I won a giveaway, and to claim my prize I’d have to sit through a sales pitch, or I’d have to pay for a service first. It just felt so insincere and was such a waste of my time. Brides have enough going on planning their weddings, they don’t have time to be harassed! That’s why for the brides at this event, I decided to create a giveaway that had no strings attached. It was very simple: people put their names and contact info in the box. I had Jen pick out a name. I called them. They won. I sent them the prizes. Done. Booth photo 4

I hand-picked everything based on what a bride would need for her big day. The products I use for my makeup kit are from professional brands, but I wanted to keep things simple and user-friendly so I stuck with drug store finds. I have tried and reviewed almost every drugstore brand product on the market, and these are the ones that I found worked well, if not better, than ones from professional brands. Here’s what the giveaway included:

Giveaway

L’oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Waterproof Mascara – I actually have this in my kit and use it exclusively on brides. It’s a great waterproof mascara because it doesn’t budge. No flaking, no clumping. You do however, need makeup wipes to remove it at the end of the night: this stuff is legit!

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream: Three words: I. Love. These. It goes on with a doe foot applicator, just like lip gloss, but it dries down to a creamy matte. It’s long-wearing and doesn’t dry out your lips as much as other long-wearing lip products do.

Zon Cosmedix 24 7 Oil Control Blotting Tissues  These are a bride’s best friend! Nothing is worse than piling on powder throughout your reception. These little babies will remove extra oils from your skin (T-Zone neutralizer, much?) in a flash. Just throw them in your bridal clutch and touch up ONCE during the reception. Done.

Ardell Natural Lashes in Beauties Ardell is the leading false eyelash company for a reason. The lash strips are flexible so they adhere to your eye shape, and they come in a million different sizes for a good price. I can use my Ardells about 4 or 5 times before I throw them out!

Tarte Travel Size Eye & Skin Primers and Moisturizer Tarte has amazing all natural skin products. This isn’t a drug store brand, but I wanted to include this travel size trio so the bride could take it along on her honeymoon.

Maybelline Baby Lips With SPF 20 These puppies are getting rave reviews from everyone in the industry. I would consider these to be an affordable version of Fresh’s Sugar lip balms. I’d rather pay $2.97 over $22 any day! Wear these alone or under lipsticks for extra hydration.

Pond’s Makeup Wipes: You can’t see them in the photo but they are behind all the other makeup. These are the drugstore dupes for MAC’s makeup wipes. I actually used these for my own wedding and they worked just as well. Super gentle on your skin, too! My favorite way to use them is to use one wipe for both eyes, another for your face, then rinse your skin with warm water and face soap. The wipes will break down the makeup and the soap will cleanse your pores.

…and I threw in a cute pair of bridal earring studs to seal the deal.

There were almost 100 entries submitted for this giveaway during the four hour show and I just shipped it off to the lucky bride today. Would you guys like to see another bridal giveaway on my blog or Youtube channel? Let me know in the comments below.

My Favorite Newbies for Fall 2012

August’s miserable heat-filled and muggy nights are slowly fading and making way for September’s cooler days and crisper evenings. This is always a fun time of year for beauty lovers: we put away our shorts and burn-out tanks and bring out our jackets and boots. We tuck away our bronzers and coral lip glosses and slap on metallic shadows and dark ,matte lipsticks. Here’s a quick collection of autumn-worthy goodies that I’m stoked about and think you should be too!

Maybelline Baby Lips

With a six-shade variety, Baby Lips visibly renew your lips with 8-hour hydration in 4 weeks. SPF 20 included, making this a great primer for lipstick, or wear alone on “light, no-makeup” days.

Illamasqua Liquid Metal in Stoic

A highly pigmented metallic cream, you can use this baby alone or under other shadows. I prefer using this teal color “Stoic” under duo-chrome pigments and eye shadows to really make them pop.

Lady Gaga Fame

I’m not a big perfume girl, but this black liquid intrigues me. When sprayed, it turns clear! Its delicate floral scent has apricot undertones.

Makeup For Ever Aqua Rouge

MUF’s answer to long-wearing lipstick. The Aqua Rouge comes in 12 shades. It’s double-ended:  the color with a doe-foot applicator helps your fill in your lips with precision, the clear top coat “locks in” the color while moisturizing.

Boscia Bright White

This cruelty-free product is an advanced, anti-aging mask that brightens, hydrates and smooths skin. All of which you will need when the summer’s humid heat turns its back on you in the coming months.

Phyto Dietary Supplement: Hair & Nails

Frustrated with nail breakage or can’t wait for your “chic” bob to grow out? Enter Phyto Dietary Supplement: This unique vitamin is packed with fatty acids and antioxidents that will illuminate skin, strengthen nails and help hair (and lashes!) grow.

Wen

Now, I know Wen has been around for a couple of years, but  I have yet to try it. I must say the QVC commercials intrigue me. I have a feeling this stuff works because its creator, Chaz Dean, used to do my own mother’s hair when I was little, and I remember how great his work was, even in the early nineties. This multitasking cleanser and conditioner was designed to “impart shine, luster, and softness.” The low-lather formula claims to be a universal product that caters to all your haircare needs, regardless of hair type. “Herbal extracts like aloe leaf juice and sweet almond oil help your locks retain moisture, while protecting them from daily and future damage.”
